GUWAHATI, March 21 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today underlined the need to empower all sections of people so that they can lead a life of dignity. He also laid stress on the members of the scheduled castes (SCs) and scheduled tribes (STs) enjoying due respect in society.

The Chief Minister was presiding over the first meeting of the State Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee (SLVMC) constituted for implementation of The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 at the Janata Bhawan here.

According to an official press release, the Chief Minister said although instances of offences against the SC and ST communities in the State are very less, the Committee must try for the right implementation of the Act and activities to generate awareness must be taken up at the district level for making the people aware about it.

People belonging to all sections of society must be empowered to live a life of dignity and members of the SC and ST communities must get their due respect, Sonowal said. He also called upon the MLAs and public representatives belonging to SC and ST communities to communicate with the government if any incident of atrocity takes place anywhere and expressed hope that forums such as SLVMC would go a long way in maintaining peace, trust and harmony in society.

The Chief Minister also called for better coordination among the Judiciary and the departments of Home, Welfare of Plains Tribals & Backward Classes (WPT & BC), deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of all districts for proper implementation of the Act.
