GUWAHATI, June 17 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has directed the completion of the JNNURM-assisted water supply project in the city by December this year.
Gogoi gave this direction during a meeting of the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board (Guwahati Jal Board) held at his office in the State Secretariat here on Tuesday, said an official statement.
As per the direction of the Chief Minister, the first trial run of the JNNURM-assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project with the command area of west Guwahati has to commence in September and the project has to be fully commissioned by December 31.
Altogether, a population of five lakh will be covered by the project by 2025. The project will consist of three intake wells, eight reservoirs, water treatment plant (WTP) of 107 million litres�per day (MLD) and 480 km of piped network.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister also directed the departments concerned to ensure the timely completion of other water supply projects in the city as well.
For the JICA-assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project with the command area of south central Guwahati, the expected date for the trial run for Phase I is January 2016, and that of commissioning is March 2016, while the expected date for the trial run for Phase II is December 2016 and commissioning, February 2017.
Over 10 lakh people will be covered by the project by 2025 and 14 lakh by 2040. The project will have two intake wells, eight reservoirs, WTP of 191 MLD and 908 km of distribution network.
For the other JICA-assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project with the command area of north Guwahati, the expected date for the trial run is December 2016, and that of the final commissioning, February 2017.
The project will cover a population of 1.5 lakh by 2025 and 2.4 lakh by 2040. It will have one intake well, one reservoir, WTP of 37 MLD and 91 km of distribution network.
For the ADB-funded Guwahati Water Supply Project for east Guwahati, the expected date of completion has been fixed at December 2018. It will cover a population of over five lakh by 2030 and over eight lakh by 2045. It will have two intake wells, five reservoirs, WTP of 98 MLD and 450 km of distribution network.
The officers implementing these projects were told that no further extension would be granted and they would have to complete these projects within the stipulated time frame so that the citizens of Guwahati city can utilise these facilities at the earliest, said the statement.
The meeting was also attended by GMC Mayor Abir Patra, Additional Chief Secretary MGVK Bhanu, and officials of the Guwahati Jal Board, GMDA, GMC, Guwahati Development Department and PWD.
