CM congratulates people for Tripura

AGARTALA, July 20 � Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar today greeted people of the State for the landslide victory of the Left Front in the just-concluded three-tier panchayat elections.

�Over 95 per cent candidates of the Left Front have won the Panchayat elections. It proved that people of the State have expressed their faith and confidence in the Left Front Government again. On the other hand, it increases our commitment to the people. We must not be complacent,� Sarkar said in a press statement.

The ruling Left front in Tripura has secured absolute majority in 563 Gaon Panchayats out of the total 591 and 35 of the 35 Panchayat Samitis and all the eight Zilla Parishads, elections for which were held Tuesday, official sources said today.

Secretary to the State Election Commission Tamal Majumder said the BJP, for the first time, secured a majority in five Gram Panchayats, Congress in 19 Panchayats and Trinamool Congress (TMC) in three Panchayats.

State Election Commissioner Y Kumar said, 50 per cent seats were for the first time reserved for women and NOTA (None of the Above) provision had also been applied for the first time. � PTI

Mizo youth held for killing python

Aizawl, July 20 � Forest officials in Mizoram have arrested a Mizo youth for killing a python and burning it in a market near the State capital Aizawl, officials said.

�Lalramliana killed a 13-foot long python near Darkhuang river and brought it to the Falkawn village market before burning it publicly on Friday,� a Forest official said.

After getting information, Forest officials rushed to the market and arrested Lalramliana.

He was booked under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and subsequently, presented in a court which sent him to three days� custody. Mizos consider the gall bladder of a python has medicinal values. They use it to treat dysentery, diarrhoea and cholera. � IANS
