CM calls for tree plantation on World Environment Day

GUWAHATI, June 3 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today called upon the people of the State to plant a tree each on this World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5 every year.

Urging the people to extend their wholehearted cooperation to achieve the goal of a pollution-free state, the Chief Minister said each individual citizen must take the responsibility of planting trees and looking after them so that the green cover of the State can be increased and effects of deforestation can be negated.

The Chief Minister also said that the government is committed to reducing the pressure on the environment and preserving the forest cover of the State so that a pollution-free environment can be ensured for future generations.

Activities such as illegal felling of trees in the forest reserves and harming the flora and fauna disturbing ecological balance have been effectively checked by the government and stringent actions would be taken against wrongdoers, he said.

Stressing the importance of people taking the initiative for saving the environment from degradation for these actions to become successful, the Chief Minister, in one of his reach-out programmes, appealed to the people of the State to plant at least one sapling on World Environment Day and nurture till it matures. He also called on them to take a selfie along with the sapling and send it through the �MyGov Assam� portal.
