CM betrayed people of State: BJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 7 Castigating Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for allowing over 600 acres of the States border land to be ceded to Bangladesh, the BJP, Assam Pradesh today said that the act was tantamount to a betrayal of the people.

Addressing a press conference, party spokesperson Siddhartha Bhattacharya and general secretary Pradyut Bora said that the BJP would start a mass signature campaign protesting the handing over of Assam's land and submit it to the countrys President.

The BJP leaders said that it was shocking that the States land was being handed over to Bangladesh in the most authoritarian manner with the State Government completely undermining the interests of the people and the State.

The BJP leaders said that the developments would start a sinister trend in which Assams interest would suffer. There was no bargaining and the States land was offered on a platter to Bangladeshit was most shocking and amounted to a betrayal of the people, they said.

The BJP leaders also questioned the silence of Assam Accord Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the matter, saying that the ceding of the States land was against the letter and spirit of the Assam Accord.

The BJP also burnt effigies of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the city.

BJP MPs of Assam also staged a dharna in New Delhi as a mark of protest.
