CM announces Rs 1000-cr package for minorities

By Correspondent

BARPETA, Dec 12 - The State Congress unit today launched its formal campaign for the ensuing Assembly elections, scheduled next year, here in the presence of AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi. The party leaders took out a padayatra with Gandhi in the front from the Barpeta Satra to Medhirtari amid a rousing welcome by the people who had gathered there.

Later, addressing a rally at the playground of Medhirtari High School, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced a package of Rs 1,000 crore for the development of the minority people of the State. He also assured that it would be implemented very soon. Stating that the uplift of the poor is the raj dharma, Gogoi said that he is committed to the all-round development of the State in spite of all the odds.

The Chief Minister accused the BJP, RSS and Bajrang Dal of spreading the message of hatred among the people, and warned that their game plan to win the forthcoming election through communalism would not be allowed to succeed. Stating that all religions are equal in the eyes of the Congress, Gogoi said that he wants to work for the poor people as a whole and not for a particular community.

He also criticised the Modi Government for his failure to visit the State during the last floods. When a rhino is killed, they protest a lot, but when a man in Assam dies, they remain silent, Gogoi said and added that this indifference of the present Central Government would receive a befitting reply in the ensuing Assembly elections.

Terming todays meeting as the first Congress campaign for the polls to be held next year, Gogoi requested the people of Barpeta to help his party.
