Cleaning silt another challenge for GMC

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 22 - The second major deluge in Guwahati in the last about ten days has posed another challenge to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in the form of cleaning the silt carried by the run-off from the hills.

Already drawing flak for a sloppy drain cleaning exercise in the city, the Corporation has engaged additional manpower to make the drains functional for day-to-day use.

Arguing that the drain cleaning work has been done properly by the Corporation workers, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania said that cleaning the layers of mud carried with run-off from the hills is an additional challenge during the monsoons that has to be tackled after every downpour.

There are more than 200 big and small drains under GMCs jurisdiction. Though we have instructed the contractors engaged for the work to clean the drains and maintain them properly throughout the year, thick layers of mud accumulate after every phase of waterlogging, added Sarania.

The Corporation has engaged at least 40 additional workers in drain cleaning in each of the six divisions of Guwahati. However, with a significant number of GMC workers engaged in the Ambubachi festival now on in the city, the drain cleaning work is likely to get affected, stated GMC sources.
