Cleaning of Diphu river begins

By Correspondent

DIPHU, Feb 10 - The newly-elected Diphu Town Committee Chairman, Rah Kro and Ward Commissioners of different wards of Diphu Town, initiated the cleaning process of Diphu river today. The cleaning drive started from 9 am and continued till noon.

The Diphu river which crisscrosses the Diphu market is choked up due to dumping of garbage like rotten vegetables, synthetic bags, waste papers from printing houses, cloth pieces from tailoring shops and other wastes. Moreover, the sewage water from houses is drained into the river. On top of this, hundreds of temporary toilets release tonnes of human excreta into the river.

The cleaning began from the Martin Bridge near Latika Cinema Hall and continued downstream. Kro himself joined the cleaning drive. The town committee authority has issued a notice of imposing punitive action against individuals for draining sewage water from houses and dumping garbage in the river. The DTC has given two to three days time to remove all the plastic pipes from toilets connecting the river, failing which police cases will be lodged against the offenders, Kro informed.
