By Correspondent

HAILAKANDI, Oct 8 - The clamour for the establishment of a medical college in Hailakandi district has been intensified by the members of the Nagarik Adhikar Suraksha Samiti here.

In a meeting of the executive committee held under the presidentship of its president Manik Chakraborty, it has

been decided to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding the establishment of a medical college for the greater interest of the people of Hailakandi.

The issues like poor health infrastructure and lack of modern medical facilities in the district were discussed in the meeting.

Speakers like general secretary Ranjit Ghosh, Sushil Paul,

Bhagwandas Sarda, Sudip Paul, Pramode Ranjan Nath, Nirmalendu Das among others expressed their dissatisfaction over the negligence of the government towards the development of the health sector in the district.

The meeting also threatened to start a movement for the fulfilment of their demand soon. It can be mentioned here that Silchar Medical College and Hospital is the only medical college serving the people of the Barak Valley.

A few years back, States Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the establishment of a medical college and hospital in Karimganj district but it has also not yet been materialised.

The people of both Karimganj and Hailakandi districts demanded that the proposed medical college should be established in the eastern part of Sonbeel (the second largest wetland in Asia) for the benefit of the people of both the districts. A committee under the name Sonbeel Purbanchal Medical College Demand Committee was also formed, said an activist Kallol Choudhury.

Draft electoral rolls prepared: The draft electoral rolls have been prepared in accordance with the rules for Election of Commissioners to the Hailakandi Municipal Board and the Lala Municipal Board under the Assam Municipal Act, 1956 (as amended) in 1995.

Two separate notices were issued to this effect here on Saturday regarding the publication of draft electoral rolls to the electors of Ward Nos. 1 to 16 under the Hailakandi Municipal Board and Ward Nos.1 to 10 under the Lala Municipal Board.
