City to host marathon on October 4

GUWAHATI, July 8 � The Tezpur based North East Sports Foundation (NESF) will hold the Guwahati Women 10-km Marathon on October 4 here in the city.

Announcing this here today, Olympian N Kunjarani Devi said, �It will be a great occasion as around 5,000 woman runners from eight States of the north-eastern region will take part in the 10-km run.�

Switching on the power point presentation of the event Kunjarani, the reputed weightlifter of the country said the organisers are doing a laudable job by organising this event with the motto � Beti Bachao Beti Padhao � the slogan introduced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ritu Baran Sarma, NESF president while welcoming the gathering, said they have taken many projects in order to encourage the sportspersons of this region. They have set up the Tezpur United Football Club, which has entered the quarterfinal stage of the ongoing Assam State Premier League. They have also organised a marathon last year in Tezpur.

SAI regional sub-centre director in-charge Subhash Basumatary said they will provide all possible help in hosting the event. He said along with the competitors, women from all walks of life may join in the race. International athlete Taibun Nisha, swimmer Mithu Barooah, lawn ball player Tania Choudhury, Assam Athletic Association secretary Pradip Nunisa and NESF chief adviser Krishna Mech were also present on the occasion.
