City to host int�l soccer matches

GUWAHATI, May 6 - The football buffs of the region will witness three high octane matches within a short span of time. All the matches will be played at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai here.

Stating this in a press conference here today, the Assam Football Association secretary Ankur Dutta said that host Mohun Bagan will play the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup�s group G league match against South China Athletic Association, Hong Kong on May 11. As the Kolkata giant has already qualified for the round of 16 from Group G, as per the AFC rule Bagan will host the runners up of Group E, either Selanghor FA from Malaysia or Tampines Rovers FC from Singapore on May 24.

Bagan has collected 11 points from their five matches so far and will end the group stage as table toppers.

Dutta further revealed that the Indian national team will face Laos at the same venue on June 7 in the Asian Cup UAE 2019 Qualifiers play off match.

It will be the second leg encounter as the first leg match will be played at Laos on June 2.

Ranked 162nd in the FIFA rankings, India will step into the final qualifier of the championship if they manage to beat 176 ranked Laos. Already 12 countries have qualified for the Asian Cup to be held in UAE. The other 12 teams will be cleared after the completion of the qualifying round.

The preparation of the Indian team will start here on May 19 while the Laos team will arrive here on June 5.
