City schoolchildren for NASA tour

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 6 Taking a close look at a rocket and getting to know about space missions from NASA astronauts could be the dream of any astronomy enthusiast. However, for the 10 bright students of the Cambridge School of Guwahati this dream would come true in the month of March this year.

The school has received an invitation from the NASA (USA) for attending a training programme to be held at NASA headquarters. The students would be imparted hands-on training by scientists and astronauts as part of NASA's Global Leaders Journey programme.

Addressing a press conference here, Dr Pulak Bhattacharyya, principal of the school said that the students would be selected for this trip after a selection test. The cost of travel would be born by the organisers of the programme and the school.

A similar invitation has been extended by reputed Melbourne (Australia)-based international youth training organisation for a young learners' programme in April 2012.

Ours is the first and only international school in the Northeast to be affiliated to the University of Cambridge (UK). Since its inception in 2010, the school has earned a very good reputation, he said.

Regarding the syllabus, he mentioned that the school offers internationally acclaimed O (Class X) and A (Class XII) level qualifications which are recognised by all colleges and universities in India and abroad.

In spite of following an international curriculum, we lay emphasis on familiarising the students with the national and regional culture. It is also an objective of the school to popularise Assam and the Northeast in the country and the world. Believing in the objective Education beyond classroom, the school offers regular students exchange programme on an international and national basis, he added.

Chranjit Chaliha, while addressing the conference said that 1:20 teacher students ration, modern e-classroom, hi tech labs etc., help in the overall development of students. The cost of education in our school is at par with most other schools of the region. Its a general myth that a school offering quality international education should charge exorbitantly high rates. We have ensured that we offer such education at rates that the majority of parents can afford, he added.
