City Sahitya Sabha unit threatens agitation

GUWAHATI, Dec 24 � The Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha, in its meeting today, cautioned the State Government that unless prompt action was initiated to implement the State Official Language Act all over Assam in different spheres of government offices, the Sabha would be constrained to take the path of agitation.

The meeting, held under the presidentship of DN Chakravartty, also urged the State Government to persuade the English-medium schools of the State to introduce Assamese as a compulsory subject.

The poets� meet held today was conducted by poet Dr Purna Bhattacharya. About 50 poets from different sakhas (branches) of the Sabha recited their self- composed poems in the meet.

The release of books was presided over by Hemen Talukdar, vice-president, Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha.

Dr Kulendu Pathak and Dr Dipti Phukan Patgiri, in their speeches, highlighted the need for production of a larger number of quality books, including books on modern science and sociology, to meet the growing requirement of the knowledge-thirsty new generation.

The meeting of the young writers was inaugurated by artiste Chetana Das, while Prof Shamim Akhtar conducted the young writers� meet.

A cultural evening was inaugurated by artiste Satyen Choudhury.

Several items of traditional and modern songs and instrumental music were also presented in the main function.

The meeting of the woman writers, titled Ramdhenu on Sunday was inaugurated by Dr Hitesh Deka, while Nani Baruah and Hari Saikia Bayan conducted the function.

The cultural evening was inaugurated by artiste Dhanada Pathak.

The three-day meeting, of the first biennial session of the Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha will conclude tomorrow with the conferment of the �Prajna Ratna� title on litterateur Nirupoma Bargohain at 9 am.

The open meeting, which is scheduled to be held at 1 pm tomorrow, will be presided over by the newly-elected president of the Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha, Riju Hazarika, while Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Asam Sahitya Sabha president Rong Bong Terang and former Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University (DU) Kamaleswar Bora will address the function.
