City lawyer elected vice chairman

GUWAHATI, Sept 15 - Suman Chetia, a city-based lawyer, has been elected as the vice chairman of the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners, Eastern Zone, the organisation established by Nani Palkhivala, renowned jurist, in 1976, a press release stated.

The Federation is the apex body and the largest organisation of tax practitioners in India with 105 tax associations comprising eminent professionals like advocates, chartered accountants and tax practitioners.

The Federation at present comprises five zones and the Eastern Zone includes West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh and the North Eastern States.

After a national seminar held on September 13 at the Notary Sadan, Kolkata, on the topic, �Developing Tax Culture in India�, the newly elected executive committee of the Eastern Zone of the Federation unanimously nominated Suman Chetia as one of its vice chairmen for 2015-2017.

Starting his career as a tax professional with Ashok Saraf & Co, a tax consultancy firm of Guwahati headed by Dr Ashok Saraf, Chetia is at present serving as a standing counsel for the Finance (Taxation) Department, Government of Assam, before the Gauhati High Court, besides serving as a special counsel for Finance & Taxation, FCI, and the Indian Railways, the release added.
