City CC champs in GSA cricket

GUWAHATI, April 11 � City Cricket Club became the new champions in the Guwahati Sports Association�s (GSA) senior cricket championship.

In the low scoring summit clash of the GSA A Division Cricket Championship for the Bhupen Chandra Mahanta Trophy at the Nehru Stadium here today, City CC defeated Food Corporation of India (FCI) Sports Club by 34 runs. Chasing a small total of 83 in the 35-over match, FCI were bundled out for 49 in 22.4 overs. Despite having some State players in their rank, FCI performed poorly in the final which reflects the standard of cricket in the State.

Romario Sharma of the winning team was adjudged the man-of-the-tournament while his teammate Raj Baruah got the man-of-the-final award. Rahul Hazarika (City) and Bikash Sharma (FCI) received the best batsman and best bowler awards respectively. The winning team became richer by Rs 10,000 while the runner-up team got Rs 5,000 as prize money along with trophies. Romario was presented Rs 2,000.

In the closing function, Assam Cricket Association secretary Bikash Baruah was present as chief guest. The family members of Bhupen Ch Mahanta, Jyotirmoyee Mahanta (wife), Dr Bandana Mahanta, Alpana Mahanta, Chandana Mahanta (all daughters) were also present on the occasion along with a host of former State players like Prabir Hazarika, Gautam Hazarika and others.

The match was officiated by Bhaskar P Bora Jehrul Islam and the scorer was Suman Mohori.
