GUWAHATI, Sept 13 - City buses will remain off the road for 24 hours beginning from 5 am tomorrow as part of their ongoing protest against the alleged indifferent attitude of the district administration.

Bus operators in Guwahati have been voicing out against the recent crackdown on the public transport system.

On being contacted, Kamrup Metro Additional DC RP Barua said that allegations of high-handedness levelled by the bus associations are false.

He said the administration and DTO have followed the rules and sent showcause notices to bus owners and given them one weeks time to reply. However, the bus associations have resorted to the strike without replying to the notices.

We have taken action against only those buses which are found to be violating rules regarding route permit, pollution and safety aspects, Barua said, adding that the administration will not succumb to such pressure tactics.

The Additional DC said 300 ASTC city buses will be pressed into service for convenience of commuters.

We seek the publics cooperation. The action against city buses has come following complaints from the general public, Barua said.
