CID team visits Athkheliya Naamghar

JORHAT, April 10 - A two-member CID team from Guwahati today visited Athkheliya Naamghar in Golaghat district to investigate an alleged scam related to the restoration work of the Naamghar carried out about four years back.

A Golaghat police source said that the CID team�s visit comes in the wake of Golaghat District and Sessions Judge recently ordering the CID to probe charges of financial anomalies committed by the then managing committee of the naamghar during repair and renovation work carried out from government funds during 2013-2014 period.

Four people had lodged four separate FIRs against the then naamghar committee members at the Golaghat PS in 2014 alleging siphoning off government funds during undertaking of renovation work of the religious place.

The source said that complaints alleged a scam involving over rupees one crore was committed during the restoration work of the naamghar by the then managing committee of the naamghar.

One of the accused in the case is a former Deputy Commissioner of the Golaghat district and another a senior Congress leader of the district.

The CID team took statements from the locals and administrative members of the naamghar. The team has also reportedly seized many documents for further verification.

The famous Athkheliya Naamghar is considered to be one of the most revered places in Assam and hundreds of devotees visit the naamghar to offer their prayers daily.
