Chutia students for ST status

MORAN, March 4 � The All Assam Chutia Students� Union has threatened to take up intense democratic action against the government if their demand for immediate declaration of Chutia community as Scheduled Tribe is not fulfilled. The central committee of Chutia Students� Union announced this at the protest meet staged at DC office, Dhemaji recently organised by All Assam Chutia Students� Union in association with Dhemaji Dist. Chutia Students� Union.

Demanding early settlement of various problems of Chutia community and problems of the people of Dhemaji, a protest meeting was also held. In the meeting, Dr Sarbeswar Chutia, executive president, All Chutia Jati Sanmilan, Haren Chutia, general secretary, Tankeswar Baruah, president, AACSU, Khirod Saikia, general secretary, AACSU in their speeches spoke about the negligence and deprivation of the community by several means. Kiran Ban Deori, president, Nikhil Bharat Deori Students� Union, Chitraranjan Basumatary, Dhemaji Dist. Students� Union, Ratul Borgohain, general secretary, AJYCP and Paramananda Sonowal, noted social activist, delivered their speeches in the meeting.

Noted historian Lalit Ch Chutia inaugurated the protest programme.

Later, a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, enclosing several demands such as immediate declaration of Chutia community as Scheduled Tribe, the naming of Bogibeel Bridge as �Sati Sadhani Setu�, installing one seat in the name of Sadhani in each school, ULFA-Govt talks, permanent solution of the flood and erosion problems of Dhemaji, etc., was submitted to the deputy commissioner, Dhemaji.
