Christmas celebrated

GUWAHATI, Dec 25 � Amid prayers for peace and harmony in society, the State today celebrated Christmas, with the rest of the world. Thousands of faithful Christians gathered at the churches for offering prayers and lighting candles.

With midnight masses marking the birth of Jesus Christ, people greeted each other. The daylong celebrations today was marked with carol singing, cultural programmes by gospel bands and other artistes, community feasts etc.

In Guwahati too, people celebrated Christmas with great enthusiasm and religious fervour. Sound of carol in air added to the festivities. Different churches of the city commenced today�s celebration with morning prayers followed by refreshments and community feast.

Thousands of people gathered at St Joseph�s Cathedral also known as Don Bosco Church Panbazar to celebrate the festival. Other than the people of Christian community, people belonging to other religions too visited the Church, which is beautifully decorated every year.

�Due to a huge rush of people during the prayers, we have arranged for TV screen, so that people standing on the ground can also take part in the prayers. Nearly 40,000 people visited the church last year,� said Father TO Jose, Parish Priest of the cathedral. Other main centres of celebrations were Christ Church and Gauhati Baptist Church, Panbazar.

Along with these centres, celebrations also took place in other parts of the city and its adjacent areas. Christmas programmes were held in other churches and sub-centres at Dispur, Ganeshguri, Borjhar, Christianbasti, Maligaon etc.
