Chowdhury ready to quit as MLA if proved guilty

By CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA, April 27 - A day after the CBI interrogated him on the Rose Valley scam, former State Finance Minister Badal Chowdhury today declared that he would quit as MLA if he was found guilty in the multi-crore-rupee scam.

A CBI team had interrogated the former minister at the MLA Hostel here on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the scam. Actually, I was not grilled by the CBI sleuths as the media reported. The CBI recorded my statement under Section 161 of the CrPC regarding the Rose Valley scam, which is a normal procedure of an investigating agency, he told reporters at the CPI(M) headquarters, Melarmath, here.

If any person or organisation proves that I took money from a chit fund company or gained property by using my office, I will surely resign as a legislator, Chowdhury maintained.

He added, If the CBI or anybody finds me at fault, I am ready to face any punishment as per the law of the land. Chowdhury said it was the then Left Front Government that had amended the Tripura Protection for Investors Act to provide safety from NBFCs.

Following recommendation of the select committee of the Assembly, the then State Government had suggested CBI probes into 37 cases against 26 NBFCs, he added.
