By The Assam Tribune

KOHIMA, March 13 Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today said the State was benefited a lot after introduction of helicopter service since December 2007 through a private operator and even cut down cost of VIPs visiting places by road.

Intervening during the question hour, Rio expressed gratitude to the Union Home Ministry for providing 75 per cent subsidy for running the chopper service, which helped VIPs and officials from both the State and the Centre in reaching interior places without consuming much time.

When the Governor, Chief Minister and other Ministers visit places by road, a number of officials, policemen and vehicles are involved in the convoy raising cost, but in case of a chopper, a few officers and police personnel are involved, Rio said.

Earlier, to a query from Congress MLAs, Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Dako Phom said total expenditure incurred since introduction of helicopter service stood at over Rs 33 crore and total revenue earned Rs 2.92 crore.

The opposition asked the government to initiate steps to cut down the huge loss incurred by the service and make it a profit making proposition. PTI
