Chirang rape accused held in Guwahati

BONGAIGAON, May 18 - Chirang Police arrested Ishan Narzary (55), accused in a rape case, from the Guwahati Railway Station last night and took him to the Amguri Police Station in Chirang district.

A case was registered against Narzary on the basis of a report lodged by the parents of the minor victim at the Nangolbhanga Police Outpost on April 25. Narzary was today produced in the Bijni court and later sent to judicial custody.

�Following a tip-off, we nabbed Narzary at the Guwahati Railway Station last night. He was planning to move out of the State. He had been hiding in Nagaland and had reached the Guwahati Railway Station from there,� said Bijni Sub Divisional Police Officer Prakash Medhi, who led the operation along with the officer in-charge of Amguri Police Station, Sur Chandra Dole.

Students of a high school staged a protest demonstration on May 9, demanding action against the rape accused and justice for the victim. The accused is a resident of Pub Maopar in Ouguri area of the district.

Chirang district All Bodo Students� Union president Khanindra Basumatary and All Bodo Women Welfare Federation leaders have demanded exemplary punishment of the accused.
