Child amusement facility inaugurated in Barpeta district jail

BARPETA, Jan 30: A child amusement facility was inaugurated in the district jail here by Inspector General of Prison Barnali Sarma on her visit to the jail yesterday.


Sarma informed that several quarters, including the rights commission, has suggested jail reform in the State and the construction of the children amusement facility in the jail is a part of the execution of these suggestions.


She also informed that after Guwahati, Barpeta is the second in the State to have this facility. The Inspector General of Prison stated that jail reform is going on following the Model Prisoners Manual 2016 and installation of CCTV cameras on the jail premises is under way as part of the improvement of the security system. Besides, a step has been taken for patrolling around the jails.


Referring to the welfare of jail inmates, Sarma said to facilitate regular health check-up, residential buildings of doctors will be built in all the jails.


Top officials of the prison expressed concern over the congested conditions in jails.
Barpeta District Jail Superintendent Gobinda Malakar expressed his happiness over the construction of the children amusement facility here and thanked the authorities concerned for taking steps to modernise the jail, which is one of the oldest such entities in Assam.
