By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 17 - The general secretary of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Anup Chetia, is likely to be brought to Guwahati on Wednesday. He will be produced before the Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI, Guwahati.

The family members of Chetia, including his wife, and several senior leaders of the pro-talk faction of the ULFA, were present in the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport from Tuesday morning as there were speculations that the ULFA leader would be brought to the city on Tuesday. However, he was not brought back.

As Chetias transit remand will come to an end on Wednesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will have to bring him back on Wednesday and produce him before the Special Judicial Magistrate. When contacted by The Assam Tribune, Chetias Counsel Bijon Mahajan said that for the cases investigated by the CBI in Assam, there is only one designated remand magistrate, that is the Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI, Guwahati. As Chetia is in the CBI custody for a case in Assam, he will have to be produced before the Special Judge on Wednesday before the transit remand ends.

After he was handed over to India by Bangladesh, the CBI took custody of Chetia as he was wanted in connection with investigation of a case registered by the Bureau in 1988 in connection with the murder of a Congress councillor in Golaghat. He was produced before the Competent Court and was given transit remand for a period of six days.

The case in which the CBI was looking for Chetia was registered in Golaghat police station under Sections 302 and 307 of the IPC and various sections of the Arms Act and Explosives Act. As per the charge, Chetia was involved in the conspiracy of killing a councillor of Golaghat. The case was handed over to the CBI in 1988 and investigations are still on.
