Chargesheet in Silapathar case filed

GUWAHATI, June 5 - Dhemaji police has filed the chargesheet in connection with the Silapathar incident in which the local office of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) was attacked and provocative statements were made, naming all the 55 arrested persons as accused.

The chargesheet was filed with the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dhemaji on June 3. Among those who have been named in the chargesheet include Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samannay Samiti president Subodh Biswas and his close aide Subhash Biswas.

Several sections, including non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code like 153A, 353 and 307 and Section 3 of the Damage to Public Property Act besides Section 25 of the Arms Act have been attributed to the case.

Meanwhile, following stiff opposition from special public prosecutor Bijon Kumar Mahajan, the Gauhati High Court today rejected the bail petition of Dilip Debnath, an accused in the Silapathar incident.
