Changes in global weather keeping temperature up

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 24 The changes taking place in the global weather system seem to have kept the day (maximum) temperature in the north-eastern part of India relatively higher even during the later part of November. This observation was made by H Pathak, Deputy Director General of Meteorology (DDGM) of the Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) here.

Presently, easterly and north-easterly winds are prevailing over the NE region. This is causing a fair weather situation and hence no rainfall is occurring in the region during this period. But to bring down the ambient temperature, there is the need of some spells of rainfall during this transitional period between the summer and winter seasons. During the monsoon, rainfalls occur due to the easterly weather system, while westerly weather system causes precipitation in the winter season.

Moisture-laden air blowing from the Bay of Bengal with south-westerly and southerly flows in the lower atmosphere serves the NE region of India as the major rain-causing factor, Pathak said.

The RMC record has it that since November 20, no rainfall has occurred in the NE region. A dry weather condition with less humidity is prevailing over the region.

The day temperature is rising across the region since November 19.

To explain this one may take the example of Guwahati. The normal day temperature of the city is 270C for the period between November 17 and November 26. Against this, the city recorded a day temperature of 27.20C on November 19, 27.80C on November 20, 28.80C on November 21, 290C on November 22, 29.40C on November 23 and 29.70C on November 24, goes the RMC record.

Significantly, the city is also recording a fluctuation in its night (minimum) temperature since November 15. The normal minimum temperature of the city between November 12 and November 16 is 170C. Between November 17 and November 26 its normal minimum temperature is 160C.

The city recorded 15.40C of minimum temperature on November 15 and 16.20C on November 16.

It recorded a minimum temperature of 16.60C on November 17, 150C on November 18, 130C on November 19, 13.40C on November 20, 13.60C on November 21, 14.80C on November 22, 13.40C on November 23 and 13.20C on November 24.
