GUWAHATI, April 5 - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh spokesperson Rupam Goswami today extended his gratitude to the people of Assam who turned out in large numbers to exercise their franchise in the first phase of the Assam Assembly elections 2016.
Goswami, addressing media persons here, stated that the huge turnout of 82.20 per cent signifies that a change of guard is inevitable in the State. �This is really significant for Assam. People from all walks of life came out spontaneously to cast their votes. This simply points to the growing consciousness amongst the voters about the importance of their democratic right,� said Goswami, observing that people of the State are eager for a change and they turned up in huge numbers yesterday to ensure that their aspiration for good governance becomes a reality.
He also condemned the incident of bomb blast at Dudhnoi and termed it the Congress-led State Government�s failure on the law-and-order front.
The BJP State spokesperson also accused the Congress of getting involved in violent activities in the ongoing polls. He said that the Congress has always resorted to money and muscle power to intimidate the voters. Goswami said that he was himself a victim of political violence in Majuli.
He requested the government officials to be unbiased in performing their duties.
Goswami called upon the voters who will cast their votes in the second phase, to come out in large numbers and exercise their voting rights for the uplift of society and a progressive Assam.
BJYM Assam president Diplu Ranjan Sarma, who was also present at the press conference, asserted that the youths of the State had come out in large numbers to exercise their voting rights in the first phase. He urged them to do the same during the second phase on April 11.
