By A CORRESPONDENT

NAGAON, Jan 27 - Along with rest of the country, Nagaon district too celebrated the 71th Republic day here centrally at Nurul Amin Stadium on Sunday last. The State Finance Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma unfurled the Tricolour and took the Guard of Honour.

Hundreds of students from various educational institutions, colleges of the district took part in the march-past during the ceremony. The martyrs as well as their families along with several individuals from art, culture and farming sectors were feted on the occasion by the district administration.

In his speech, Dr Sarma highlighted various flagship schemes being initiated in the state as well as in the district by the BJP-led state government. Dr Sarma also referred to the unfortunate rise of Muslim fundamentalism in the district as well as in the state and said that the issue was a major concern in the entire zone and would be a big threat to the country in the days to come.

Referring to the activities being initiated by the Union Government, Dr Sarma said, the BJP-led NDA government is working hard to provide social justice to all and as part of it, Modi-led Union Government has provided justice to Muslims women through scraping of the triple talak system. Similarly, by settling the years-long controversial issue over Ram Mandir construction, the government has also provided spiritual justice to Hindus as well as Muslims, Sarma claimed.

Criticizing the ongoing protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, Dr Sarma said, I respect all those protesters who took to the streets and staged protest against the Act. But protest should not be based on falsehood and rumour as it can lead to disturbance only, he added.
