Centre to improve connectivity in Manipur: Gadkari

IMPHAL, Dec 12 - Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari has assured Manipur Government that he would take all possible steps to improve connectivity in Manipur.

This was disclosed at a national conference on �New Technology for Road Construction� in Lucknow recently. The conference, which was attended by Manipur PWD Minister Biswajit Singh and senior State Government officials appealed to the Union Minister to sanction funds for repairing of roads at the earliest for the State.

�The Union Minister assured full cooperation with the Manipur Government in taking up road projects in a bid to boost connectivity of the State and the region as well. We also demanded release of Central funds in order to speed up the ongoing projects,� the Minister said while sharing information with this correspondent.

Gadkari also underscored the need for construction of new roads, especially in the rural areas. �We need to improve infrastructure in the remote areas that will improve economy and grow business,� the Union Minister said, adding that an expert team will be sent to conduct a study on the �sinking zone� in Manipur.

Meanwhile, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister of Manipur Karam Shyam has laid emphasis on finding an alternative mode of transportation for LPG distribution. He was speaking at a review meeting on marketing infrastructure and availability of petroleum products.

Stating that the north-eastern region is blessed with hydrocarbon resources, the Minister said that this region should explore its resources to become self-reliant.
