NEW DELHI, March 3 - DoNER Ministry�s act of felicitating sports persons of North East has landed it into trouble, with Election Commission (EC) showcausing it for holding the function without its permission. The EC has sought response from the Central Government by 3 pm on Saturday.

�It has come to our notice through media reports that the DoNER and Home Affairs Ministries felicitated nine sports persons who had participated in Rio Olympics from Northeastern States. Out of them, five hails from Manipur, which is going through polling process,� the EC said in letters written to the secretaries of the two Ministries.

�You are, therefore, requested to inform the EC the reasons and circumstances under which prior permission from MCC (model code of conduct) angle was not taken for organising the said felicitation,� the EC said.

The sports persons, honoured at an event at North Block, were presented with mementos and cash award of Rs 2 lakh each.

Those felicitated include Dipa Karmakar (Gymnastics), P Sushila Chanu (Hockey- Women), H Lal Ruatfeli (Hockey-Women), L Bombayla Devi (Archery), Chinglensan Singh (Hockey-Men), K Kothajit Singh (Hockey-Men) and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting).

Two more Olympians from NE � Shiva Thapa (Boxing) and T Anuradha Devi (Hockey-Women) � were also awarded in absentia at the event. Five of them hail from Manipur.

Minister of State DoNER, Jitendra Singh and MoS Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju felicitated the sports persons.
