GUWAHATI, Sept 14 - Condemning the BJP governments decision to grant refugee status to Hindu migrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan, the Janajati Smriti Jagaran Samiti, Asom, today said that the move would jeopardise the interests of Assams indigenous people, who are already under an existential crisis following large-scale infiltration from Bangladesh.

It is apparent now that both Muslim and Hindu migrants swarming the State from Bangladesh will be residents and ultimately citizens of Assam. Both the BJP and the Congress the two so-called national parties have conspired to ensure that the rights of the indigenous people are crushed under the weight of the migrants, it said in a statement.

The Samiti also demanded that all the MPs of Assam should resign collectively over the disturbing development.

At a time when the Supreme Court is taking the initiative to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people by updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and detecting the illegal migrants living in the State, it is regrettable that the Congress and the BJP should be working overtime to accord citizenship to the illegal migrants. The move will also totally make the Assam Accord redundant, it added.
