By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Nov 23 The Centre may order downstream basin study of every hydro electric project in the neighbouring State besides environment and biodiversity impact studies. This was reportedly conveyed by Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh to a delegation of Sangharsh, informed Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) general secretary Akhil Gogoi.

A 25-member delegation led by Medha Patkar comprising a five-member delegation of KMSS that met Jairam Ramesh discussed a host of issues, including the issue of big dams.

Gogoi told newsmen that the Minister informed that downstream basin study of all hydro power projects is being cleared. There is a proposal to order environment and biodiversity impact study of the Projects, Gogoi added.

A committee is also being set up to study the issue and both the Ministry of Water Resources and Power are

likely to get in touch with the agitators, Akhil Gogoi quoted Ramesh as having assured. Separate committees are also being set up for a total impact study of Kuricchu, Ranganadi, Kopili and Karbi Longpi hydro power projects, he added.

On the plea for ordering a moratorium on all works on the Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric project, Ramesh reportedly remarked that only the Prime Minister has the authority to halt works.
