Centre may extend deadline for border fencing

By Newmai News

AIZAWL, Dec 29 - The Centre is likely to extend the deadline for erecting barbed wire fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Mizoram.

The extension will be required as the executing agencies have failed to complete the project within the stipulated time. Mizoram shares 318-km unfenced border with Bangladesh. Of this, 233 km remained to be fenced.

Officials of Mizoram Home department said that erection of border fence started in 2005 and was initially scheduled to be completed by 2013.

The Union Home Ministry had already extended the deadline once and it was to be completed by March this year.

However, the two executing agencies could not even complete their work within the extended deadline due to several reasons as a result of which the Centre is likely to further extend the deadline.

Erection of barbed wire fence along the Bangladesh border in Mizoram is being executed by Engineering Projects India Limited (EPIL) and National Projects Construction Corporation Limited (NPCC). While NPCC will construct fences in a 150-km stretch and the EPIL will construct fences in an 83-km stretch.

Sources said that EPIL has completed more than 90 per cent work while the NPCC has completed over 50 per cent work.
