Central team to resolve NEHU impasse

By Raju Das

SHILLONG, Oct 20 A three-member Central Government team arrived here from New Delhi this evening to find ways to solve the ongoing protest by students to remove North Eastern Hills University Vice Chancellor, Prof AN Rai.

The team from the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry is slated to have discussions with Governor RS Mooshahary, who is the Rector of the Central University, government officials and students from the University to bring an end to the protests.

For the second day, the University remained closed with teachers, staff and students announcing a non-cooperation movement against Prof Rai. The students tried to lock the gate of the University today, but on the insistence of the police they allowed the gates to remain open.

The Central team is here after the State Government requested the HRD Ministry to re-think its appointment of Prof Rai and look into the students demand. The NEHU students are demanding a tribal VC for the University.

Prof Rai, a bio-chemist appointed by the Centre through a notification, has said that he would step down if the Centre directs him to do so. His request to hold talks with the students earlier during the week failed.
