BJP’s seat sharing in Assam polls

GUWAHATI, Feb 18: The BJP’s central leadership will take the final decision regarding alliance and seat-sharing arrangements among the NDA partners for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Food Processing Industries Narendra Singh Tomar said here today.

Addressing a press conference on the occasion of inauguration of the State BJP’s new media centre at Khanapara here, Tomar also claimed that the BJP-led NDA will retain power in the coming elections backed by “pro-incumbency”.

Tomar is the BJP’s election in-charge for the Assam Assembly polls.

“The central leadership of our party will take the final decision regarding issues like alliances and seat-sharing. The State committee will present its views and suggestions to the central committee, which will, in turn, take a decision,” he said.

Asked about the likelihood of the BJP dropping some of its sitting legislators and nominating fresh faces, he said, “Once the notification for the polls is announced, the State election committee of our party will send its recommendations to the central election committee. And what the central election committee decides will be final.”

He said that the BJP is preparing for the Assembly elections with enthusiasm.

“Last time we contested the Assembly elections as part of an alliance. Our effort will be to fight the coming polls unitedly and win more number of seats compared to the previous elections,” said the senior BJP leader.

He said that Assam has witnessed all-round development during the past five years under the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government.

“We all know what the situation was in Assam five years back. Development had come to a halt. There was deterioration in the law-and-order situation and there was rampant corruption. Since the BJP came to power here, things have taken a turn for the better. The Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been able to ensure justice for the North East. The ‘Assam Team’, led by Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma has brought development, curbed corruption and improved the law-and-order situation,” Tomar said.

He added that Assam has been able to deal successfully with the crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
