Centenary celebrations of Nagaon Mahila Samity end

NAGAON, March 27 - In the last four days, from March 23 to 26, women from different parts of the district and State gathered at Nehrubali, here to take part in the centenary celebrations of Nagaon Mahila Samity and its State conference.

The centenary programme began with flag hoisting by its president Lakhimi Bora on March 23 morning which was followed by smriti tarpan initiated by advisor Monorama Rajkhowa. Achanchala Bora declared open the exhibition arranged on this occasion.

In the open session held under the chairmanship of Nirupama Gohain, Dr Malin i, chairperson of Mohakabya Adhyan Kendra, Jorhat formally released the historical accounts of Nagaon Mahila Samiti edited by Anu Bora Hazarika. Former MLA Dr Durlov Chamuah also graced the occasion.

A cultural function was also held on the inaugural day.

On March 24 two seminars was held. In the first session, a former judge and a member of Human Rights Commission Naba Kamal Bora, advocate Debabrata Sarma and advocate Bibha Goswami spoke on �Domestic violence act and safety of women, property rights of women and sexual atrocities and safety of children respectively . The first seminar was arranged under the auspices of District Legal Service Authority and chaired by Tripti Ari.

Another seminar on the role of mother in present society was held where Manika Saikia, Principal Dilip Bora and Dr Bibha Goswami took part. Former Principal Dr Indira Bordoloi was in the chair.

Hemaprabha Chutia, Ratna Gohain, Nazia Rafique, Renu Bora, Minakhi Bhuyan, Kumud Bora, Anima Bora and Nureza Begum were felicitated in the function.

The 91st biennial conference of the State Mahila Samity began with the hoisting of flag by its president Nilima Kakati followed by smriti tarpan formally initiated by state working president Joylakhi Bora on March 25

More then 100 delegates of different parts of the State took part in the delegate session. The session discussed the organisational matters and retained the old committee for the next two years.

Radio singer Durgamayee Bhuyan declared open the cultural function on March 25.

On the concluding day, a procession was taken out which was flagged off by renowned writer Ratnamala Saikia.

The open session held in the afternoon was graced by social worker Dr Lakhi Goswami. In her address, Dr Goswami called upon the members of Mahila Samity to work against religious fundamentalism, child trafficking, rape etc. She also observed that it was very unfortunate that Assamese people adopting the cow belt culture like Chath Puja, Sani Puja, Hanuman Puja etc., by ignoring Srimanta Sankaradeva.
