GUWAHATI, March 3 Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) Abhijit Rabha was kidnapped together with Range Officer Ranjan Baruah from a place near Sinhasan Pahar in Karbi Anglong district today.
The two officers were serving under the Karbi Anglong East Forest Division.
Police said that the two officers were kidnapped from near Borlag under Manja Police Station around 1-15 pm. Police suspect the involvement of the newly-floated militant outfit KPLT in the kidnapping.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Suresh Chand said that the vehicle the duo was travelling in was intercepted near a forested place by a group of armed militants.
They were returning from the Sinhasan hill when their vehicle was stopped by the militants. The other forest personnel in the vehicle were allowed to go while Rabha and Baruah were detained by the ultras, Chand said.
Sinhasan Pahar is known to be a hotbed of militancy in the district.
Police said that the forest officials did not take security personnel with them while travelling in the area known to be militant-infested.
PTI adds from Diphu: Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police, D B Chetry told PTI that a delegation of 60 members, led by Rabha, had gone to the Singhasan Hills to conduct a forest department survey on February 27 and 30 of them had returned on February 29.
The militants later sent a message demanding a ransom of Rs 1 crore for the release of the two officers.
