CBI probe demanded into Kalitas death

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 4 The All Guwahati Subdivision Students Union has demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of student leader Arup Kalita whose body was recovered from a swamp near a forest office at Kukurmara after he had gone missing about a year back under mysterious circumstances.

In a statement, the students body said that the circumstances made it clear that Kalitas death was mysterious and also strongly hinted towards failure on the part of the police and the administration.

We want a CBI inquiry at the earliest so that the culprits are identified, booked, and punished, it said.

The students body will be staging a two-hour sit-in demonstration on August 6, demanding arrest of the culprits.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has also expressed its concern over the developments, and said that it exposed the sinister work of the forest mafia.

In a statement, the AJYCP said that rampant corruption at official levels was helping the mafia-raj to thrive, resulting in wanton destruction of forest wealth.

We demand that the Government take immediate steps to rout the mafia from the forests of Assam, it said.
