CBI grills Kolkata Police chief

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Feb 9 - Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar was grilled by the CBI at its anti-corruption branch here today. He is likely to be questioned face-to-face with Kunal Ghosh, former TMC MP, tomorrow.

Kumar will be questioned together with Ghosh as the latter was the first to allege that Kumar had tampered with evidence. Ghosh arrived in the State capital this evening.

The CBI today came up with questions comprising several pages, sources said. There was tight security around the CBIs office provided by the Meghalaya Police. Kumar entered the office at 11 am, accompanied by Murlidharan Sharma, Kolkata Deputy Commissioner of Police and head of the anti-terror wing of West Bengal, Jawad Salim, Additional Commissioner of Police and his counsel, Biswajeet Deb.

However, the CBI asked Sharma, Salim and Deb to leave within half an hour. The CBI team is being headed by Tahthagata Varman and other SP-rank officials.

Some of the questions that the CBI posed before Kumar relates to his alleged tampering of evidence while investigating the Saradha chit fund scam as the head of the Special Investigation Team constituted by the West Bengal Government.

Meanwhile, the fight between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress is being fought at another level too. Sharma, the head of the anti-terror wing, is also heading the Kolkata Police raid on the office allegedly having links with fraudulent transactions involving CBI interim chief M Nageswara Raos wife.

His presence here sends a direct message to the BJP that the TMC would not let go without a fight. Sharma entered the office again late in the afternoon after lunch was served to Kumar inside the office.
