GUWAHATI, Dec 21 - A special CBI court here has convicted two senior bank officials, three government officers and as many suppliers for misappropriating funds of the Assam State Development Corporation (ASDC).
The accused persons � Mon Kumar Das, the branch manager of a Hailakandi branch of Punjab National Bank, its head cashier Bani Pada Dutta, Hailakandi DRDA Assistant Project Officer Rajen Das, Algapur Extension Officer Nikhilesh Sen, ASDC Development Officer Ratan Chandra Kirtonia and suppliers Bijoy Krishna Dey, Dilip Chandra Dey and Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuyan � connived to misappropriate funds of the ASDC meant for the uplift of people under various categories and those living below the poverty line during the period 1993-94.
Pronouncing the judgement, Special Judge Binod Kumar Chetri sentenced Mon Kumar Das, Bani Pada Dutta, Rajen Das, RC Kirtonia, Nikhilesh Sen, Bijoy Krishna Dey and Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuyan to undergo a sentence of three years and pay a fine of Rs 5,000 under various sections of the IPC. Further, Mon Kumar Das, Bani Pada Dutta, Rajen Das, RC Kirtonia and Nikhilesh Sen were also sentenced to undergo five years� imprisonment with a fine of Rs 20,000 for their offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Both the sentences will run concurrently.
