AGARTALA, July 3 - Mother Protector of Tripura over the past more than 500 years, the Tripureswari temple in Gomati district was formally inaugurated in 1501 by princely Tripuras conqueror-ruler Dhanya Manikya (1490-1520). It is one of the holiest Hindu shrines in the Indian subcontinent and is among the 51 hallowed Shakti Peeths. The presiding deity, Mata Tripureshwari, has been offered gifts by devotees in the form of monetary contributions and gold ornaments.

After long 69 years, these gold ornaments are being weighed and counted for proper accounting at the Treasury office in Gomati under strict security and supervision of District Magistrate Tarun Kanti Debnath, retired District and Sessions Judge Subrata Paul and other officials including trust member Chandan Chakraborty.

Official sources from Udaipur said that the counting and weighing of valuables commenced from Monday and are still on. Out of seven huge trunks of ornaments, 9 kg of gold in two trunks and 42 kg of silver have already been counted. A round of counting was last done in 1959. The current counting, along with proper cataloguing, will continue till the work is over.

The task is part of the State Governments efforts to make the Tripureswari temple a global religious tourist site. A trust was formed to run the temple in a proper manner in the presence of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on June 22.
