Cash awards for Manipuri athletes

IMPHAL, July 25 � Manipur government has announced cash incentive of Rs 15 lakh for weight lifter Khumujam Sanjita(48kg) for not only winning gold medal in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games today.

The announcement was made by the State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh while responding to opposition member Dr I Ibohalbi�s appeal to recognize the efforts of the State sportspersons for winning of medals in CWG, during the zero hour of the ongoing budget session of assembly on Friday.

Urging the house to recognize their performance in the Games, MLA Ibohalbi said they are proud of their performance. So the government should congratulate them. Chief Minister also lauded the performance of the State players. Besides Sanjita, the government also decided to give cash award of Rs 10 lakh each for silver medalist lifter Saikhom Mirabai (48kg) and judoka Likmabam Sushila who won a silver medal in women�s judo (48kg category). Sarita won the title with a total lift of 173kg while Mirabai lifted 170kg.

The bronze medalist judoka Kalpana Thoudam (52kg) will also be awarded a cash prize of Rs 8 lakh.

Sushila Likmabam also took the silver after losing the final bout to Scotland�s Kimberley Renicks in the women�s 48kg category. Sushila is from Manihar and Chaobi is from Heingang Mayai Leikai in Imphal East district, had won the best judoka title in the 5th Asian Youth Judo championship, 2011. Kalpana is the first Indian Judo player who won a bronze medal in a world champion held in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) in 2010. She is a resident of Modhu and Bimola of Kakwa Naorem Leikai in Imphal West district.
