Case for alleged insult to Tricolour

MANGALDAI, July 31 - The Mangaldai Police have registered a case under the provisions of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971 against the District Transport Officer (DTO) of Darrang. According to the FIR lodged at the Mangaldai Police Station on July 29 by former AASU activist and prominent lawyer Premeswar Sarma, the National Flag was seen flying half mast at the office complex of the District Transport Officer even after 7 pm on July 29 to mark the seven-day national mourning on the demise of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

Sarma accused the District Transport Officer of causing dishonour and insult to the National Flag in the FIR. The officer in-charge of the Mangaldai Police Station, Lohit Chandra Rabha, accompanied by Second Officer Twinkle Goswami, immediately rushed to the District Transport Office and seized the National Flag. The police have registered a case (No. 668/15) under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971.

Meanwhile, DTO Pabitra Baishya has admitted to media persons here that he had no knowledge regarding any restriction on the flying of the National Flag after dusk.
