IMPHAL, Oct 22 Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh inaugurated the 15th annual conference of the Cardiological Society of India, NE Chapter, here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ibobi said the need of the hour is for a concerted effort by medical professionals especially cardiologists in dissemination of correct information to the public on prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases.

Today, cardiovascular diseases have become the most common cause of mortality and morbidity among non-communicable diseases, Ibobi said. With changing lifestyle and lack of mobility, cardiovascular problems like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity and stress problems are increasing day by day, he added.

In this scenario, cardiologists have to play a great role in minimising deaths due to heart-related diseases. Because of the change in lifestyle, food habits, etc., there is a rise in heart-related diseases. Every year, about 17 million people die of heart-related diseases in the world, thus making it the most common disease causing death, he added.
