GUWAHATI, Aug 21 - Animal carcass, which is often considered a civic nuisance, could soon emerge as a new source of revenue for Assam!
If things go as per plan, the State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department would soon link a carcass disposal plant to the flourishing bone- China crockery market in India and across the globe.
Official sources informed that the department is preparing an action plan to link the carcass disposal plant being set up at Dhing in Nagaon district and very soon it would seek expressions of interest from those involved in the bone-China crockery market.
As per an estimate, the work of the carcass disposal plant, a first of its kind initiative, will start functioning by the end of this year.
Sources further stated that animal carcass lying unaddressed has slowly but surely led to several health and civic issues, which was why the plan was conceived.
�The problem has aggravated largely due to the diminishing population of natural scavengers and an ardent need was felt to find a permanent solution to the issue,� sources pointed out, adding that several nodal collection counters could work as collection centres of such animal carcasses.
�The history of bone-China dates back to several decades. It is still a flourishing market both in India and abroad. The department plans to use the carcasses of livestock in a productive manner, which would only benefit us,� a source in the department told this Reporter.
In the beginning, it was exclusively produced in the United Kingdom. However, later, owing to the increase in demand, many factories were set up in Japan, China, Iran, Bangladesh and even India.
In recent times, China has emerged as arguably the biggest producer of the ware. In India, Rajasthan is the biggest producer of the product. Bone China is soft porcelain composed of bone-ash mixed with other material.
