Cancer screening camp

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 26 In view of the high incidence of cancer in Kamrup (Metro) district, the Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute is organising a free oral, cervical and breast cancer screening camp for the general public in the institute campus on May 2. The camp will be from 9.30 am to 1 pm.

As per the Population Based Cancer Registry of the ICMR, the incidence of cancer in Kamrup (Metro) district is the third highest in the country. As per the World Health Organization, one-third of all cancers can be prevented, one-third can be detected at an early stage and one-third of the patients require palliative care.

Unfortunately, due to illiteracy, poverty, fear, ignorance and myths associated with cancer, two-thirds of the patients in our country present themselves in the fairly advanced stage of the disease. Cancer of cervix and breast in females can be prevented or detected at an early stage through public education and cancer screening programmes, Dr AC Kataki, Director of the Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute said. Similarly, he added, cancer of oral cavity in male and female patients which is very common in the country, is largely amenable for prevention and early detection.
