Cancel land docs of non-tribals: Karbi students

By Correspondent

DIPHU, Oct 25 - A joint protest demonstration was carried out by the Karbi students and youth bodies like KSA (Simeon Phangcho faction), Students & Youth Council (SYC), All India Students Association and Students & Youth for Justice here on Saturday at the Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park here demanding immediate cancellation of land documents allotted to non-tribal communities in Karbi Anglong.

Laichan Engleng, convenor of SYC said that autonomous power, which was conferred with an aim to protect the land, language and culture of the hill tribes, has been rendered redundant. As a result, the autonomous powers delegated to the KAAC are being lost one after the other. The KAAC has failed to protect the land of the hill tribes and it has been snatched away by the outsiders (non-tribals), the student leader claimed. The Karbis have over the years been compelled to sell their valuable land due to their poor economic condition, thus reducing them to the status of landless people today, Engleng reasoned.

Meanwhile, the student leader demanded immediate cancellation of the land documents issued to the non-tribals.

Later, the Karbi students and youth bodies submitted a memorandum to the Chief Executive Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang. The Karbi student bodies claimed that the special power enshrined in the Sixth Schedule and conferred on the hill tribes for protection of their land, culture and language is under serious threat under the present circumstances.

On the other hand, KAAC has also been violating the Karbi Anglong (Mikir Hills) Land and Revenue Act, 1953 by allotting land pattas to non-tribal people and land mafias along the Assam-Nagaland border, the memorandum stated.
