Campaign for total cancer treatment facility at AMC

By Bureau

DIBRUGARH, March 16 - A campaign has been launched here by advocate Ganesh Gohain Phukan, for the establishment of a full-fledged cancer treatment facility within the Assam Medical College. He said the medical college has the necessary basic infrastructure to get the facility up and running.

The Tata Group has entered into an agreement with the Assam Government, whereby the former will invest to develop eighteen cancer treatment centres in the State. One such centre has been proposed in Dibrugarh. Phukan said the Dibrugarh centre can take off from the already sanctioned cancer treatment facility here at the AMC, which is being set up with a Central grant of Rs 45 crore.

He said effective cancer treatment in the State is a necessity, due to high prevalence of the disease in the region. He said that better treatment facilities in Assam would also be of service to cancer patients in the neighbouring States. He said that at present, the cancer treatment facilities at Guwahati are insufficient to meet the needs of the region, apart from entailing long and tedious journeys to Guwahati.

Phukan has petitioned the State government in support of the campaign for enhanced cancer treatment at the AMC. He has also written separately to the Chief Minister, and is awaiting response. Earlier too, Phukans group has been campaigning for upgradation of the AMC to a full scale medical university.
