Campaign for Manipur bypolls gains momentum

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, Nov 11 - Political parties in Manipur have stepped up campaigning for the November 21 bypolls to Thangmeiband and Thongju Assembly constituencies in Imphal West and Imphal East districts.

The Manipur Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh, led the poll campaign for the Indian National Congress (INC) candidates Jyotin Waikhom and Bijoy Koijam in Thangmeiband and Thongju constituencies respectively, while the BJPs State unit president Thounaojam Chaova flanked by former ministers and firebrand opposition leaders of the State, including O Joy, have already launched their campaigns for the party candidates Kh Joykishan and Th Biswajeet in Thangmeiband and Thongju constituencies respectively.

On Sunday,Union Minister of State Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman, arrived here in the State to take part in the election campaign for BJP candidates.

Sitharaman, while speaking at the election meeting in Thangmeiband and Thongju constituencies, said that her party must win the bypolls in order to free the people from the corrupt Congress regime. Union Minister also said that the Centre has initiated the investigation into the infamous Loktak lake scam.

Meanwhile, after the event, she also interacted with business community at Dhramasala of Thangal Bazar, Imphal, as a part of campaign. Bypolls in the two Manipur Assembly constituencies were necessitated after the Speakers Tribunal disqualified two All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MLAs Kh Joykishan of Thangmeiband and Th Biwajit of Thongju under the anti-defection law on May 28 this year. Though the BJP has no MLA in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, the party is targeting to secure both the seats in the bypolls.
