Call to view Rasarajs works in national perspective

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 6 Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani today underscored the need for assessing the contributions of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa in the national perspective so that his stellar contributions in the field of Assamese literature and Assamese nationalism could be appreciated by a wider audience.

Speaking at a function held at the Assam Down Town University today for Release of Proceedings of Vice Chancellors Conference held in New Delhi in November last year, Irani also said she would move the UGC for instituting a Bezbaroa chair in universities of the North-east.

We need to spread the ideals of Bezbaroa before a national audience. Bezbaroa was a legendary figure with unparallelled contributions and it would be in the fitness of things that the whole of India know about this great son of the country, she said.

The Union minister also announced that under the Ishan Vikash programme, 2,000 students of Class IX-XII and 500 teachers from the North-east would be taken out on science exposure tours to top-notch technical institutions such as ISRO, IITs and NIITs.

On the proposed new education policy, Irani said the Government was inviting opinions from all stakeholders including teachers, students and parents for evolving an inclusive and holistic policy.

Unlike in earlier years, the new policy will not be a mere bureaucratic exercise devoid of the ground realities confronting the sphere. Education needs to be value-based and a harbinger of positive socio-economic transformation, she added.

Later, addressing a party meeting, Irani exhorted the Assam BJP workers to carry forward the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan across the State by devoting at least two hours a week.

Referring to the priority Prime Minister Narendra Modi accorded to the campaign, Irani said that it was for the first time in post-Independence India that a Prime Minister had taken a broom to spearhead a cleanliness campaign.

I urge all BJP workers to carry forward the campaign in the State. If you can devote just a couple of hours a week for the cleanliness drive, it would spread to every nook and corner of Assam, she said, adding that all the BJP units should take up the campaign seriously.

Reiterating that the Modi Government was committed to fulfilling the aspirations of people across the country, the Union minister said that everybody should extend a helping hand in accomplishing the mission.

Assam BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharya said that all grassroots units of the party had already been sensitized for taking the campaign to its logical conclusion.

We are a committed lot. The campaign would also help our party workers to connect with the public in a big way. All our grassroots units are taking this campaign very seriously and with dedication, he said.
